Binge drinking quiz replaces £80 fine
Plans are underway to offer binge drinkers the chance to take a ‘Who Wants To Be a Millionaire’ style quiz, if they commit a public order offence relating to alcohol.
Instead of being slapped with an £80 fine, convicted drinkers would be asked to pay just £40. They would also be invited to take an education session on the impact of alcohol abuse.
The scheme will be trialled by South Wales police later this year, according to reports in today’s Telegraph newspaper.
Chief Inspector Max Davies said the scheme aimed to tackle the root causes of alcohol related anti-social behaviour. ‘Slapping a fine on someone is a quick fix but will it make them stop and think about changing their behaviour?’ he said. ‘We are hoping a quiz, with a multiple choice Who Wants to be a Millionaire format, may get the message through. We have to address the root causes of the problem if we are to see an end to our binge drinking culture in the long term.’
The scheme was first piloted in Hertfordshire and two-thirds of the 216 people who took part later said they had cut their alcohol intake. People who accept the quiz and education course offer will also avoid a criminal record, meaning their job and travel prospects won’t be hampered in future.
