Indiana Jones to steal the show at Cannes Film Festival
Indiana Jones and his leather jacket will steal the show at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
The blockbuster may not be in the running for the festival’s top award – the prestigious Palme d’Or – however it will certainly overshadow the official roster of movies from directors including Clint Eastwood, Steven Soderbergh and Walter Salles.
Homegrown talent has been overlooked at this year’s festival, at which Sean Penn is this year’s jury chairman.
Mike Gubbins, editor of Screen International explained that the presence of a Hollywood blockbuster is a regular on the Cannes calendar. ‘It’s become tradition to sit in the bar at four in the morning moaning about how the festival has sold out, but these films are of course the perfect foil to the heavy fare elsewhere.
Aside from Harrison Ford returning with his Stetson and whip, the starry line-up of attendees looks promising. Eastwood, Penn, Woody Allen, Quentin Tarantino, Penelope Cruz, Scarlett Johansson, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Diego Maradona are all expected to put in an appearance.
The jury is still out as to whether an ageing Indiana will draw the crowds but as Nick James, editor of Sight and Sound magazine, says: ‘It’s about whether or not we can buy Harrison Ford still doing this stuff. Can you revive a franchise this long after the event? Probably you can, because a lot of people won’t be able to resist.’
