East meets West on the Kings Road
Where? Sushinho, 312-314 Kings Road, London SW3 5UH (020 7349 7496, www.sushinho.com)
What’s in a name? Everything! Though it doesn’t take a scientist to work out this chic lounge restaurant serves up Japanese cuisine, you’ll be forgiven for thinking they added the word to for cheap thrills.
So we’re talking fusion? Indeed – a hybrid of Japanese and Brazilian, as conjured by the owner, who wanted to bring together his two favourite styles of food.
What did you eat? What didn’t we! With more than thirteen sections on the menu, it was a bit of a minefield of sushi-related dishes. Not only that, there were entrees, soups, salads, tempura and mains galore. Highlights included tempura rolls with salmon, crab and cream cheese, the pork belly salad (honestly, the best thing we ordered) and a main course of red snapper with squid ink gnocchi. For a perfect accompaniment, try the cassava chips.
To drink? It had to be cocktails (from £7.50). The menu is longer than your right arm.
For dessert? We were pleasantly surprised by the variety of dishes on offer in a predominantly Asian restaurant (perhaps this is where the Brazilian influence ruled!) The passion crumble with toffee ice-cream was such a hit we recommended it to the couple on the table next door.
Overall? We loved the unique twist on Japanese cuisine and the surroundings – think comfy sofa seats, romantic lighting, exposed brickwork and bamboo. The extensive menu was a little overwhelming, so we had to seek guidance from the staff.
