Cheap but stylish eats in London's Wimbledon
Where? Lambourne Bar & Grill, 263 The Broadway, Wimbledon, London SW19 1SD (020 8545 8661, www.lambournebarandgrill.com)
Strawberries and cream before the tennis? While I’m sure they could find you some summer fruits if you really want, this is more a dinner-and-drinks-with-friends kinda place than afternoon-tea-with-the-blue-rinse-brigade. Kick back with a cocktail or beer in the bar, then duck into the restaurant at the back for some great British grub.
So what exactly are they grilling? This is a crowd-pleaser of a menu, with something for everyone, including pub classics like beer-battered haddock and hand-cut chips or crisp belly of pork with mustard mash and honeyed leeks. If you fancy something a little, well, fancier, our roasted seabass with sautéed leeks and herb pesto went down a treat, while the salmon salad with sesame seeds and soy ginger dressing managed to be both healthy and delicious.
Forget the diet, what are we drinking? There are some fabulous cocktails (get there between 5pm-8pm, Monday through Friday, and enjoy a prolonged, buy-one-get-one-free happy hour), but the Lambourne’s USP is its organic wine, both red and white, served in environmentally friendly cartons.
