  • Enjoy delicious, well-sourced seasonal eats at Magdalen

    Where? 152 Tooley Street, London SE1 2TU (020-7403 1342)

Mood? Chi-chi French bistro: think wine-coloured walls, big gilt mirrors, paper tablecloths and huge vases of fresh flowers.

Who goes? By day, lawyers and bankers from the new office developments around City Hall; come the evening, it’s filled with the local loft dwellers from trendy Bankside.

To eat? With foodie mecca Borough Market just up the road, the daily changing menu makes the most of well-sourced seasonal produce: smoked eel with apple and celeriac remoulade (£8*) might be followed by baked brill with leeks and brown shrimps (£15.50*) or a sharing plate for two such as a whole roast pheasant (£28.50*) or Hereford beef parmentier (£30*), which is a bit like a huge cottage pie. Finish with something sweet: rhubarb compote and custard (£5.50*), say.

To drink? The gem of a wine list not only highlights the world’s up-and-coming (and better-value) regions such as Austria, Portugal and southern France, but offers 12 bottles by the carafe, so you can try more than one.

Need to know? There are no vegetarian dishes on the menu, but the kitchen is happy to knock something together if you ask.
