  • Michelle Obama wears Basso & Brooke

Michelle Obama flew the flag for British fashion this week, stepping out at the White House’s Evening of Poetry and Music in a top by London design duo, Basso & Brooke.

Known for supporting American labels, most notably the up-and-coming Jason Wu, Michael Kors and high street favourite J. Crew, the First Lady of Fashion switched her allegiance for the evening, to sport a Swarovski crystal-beaded, off-the-shoulder top from the designers’ spring/summer ’09 collection.

Proving her style credentials, not only was the top a glittering choice, but it was also customised specifically for the First Lady, shortened from its original length as a knee-length dress. She teamed it with a pair of Maison Martin Margiela white cropped trousers, silver peep-toe kitten heels, and some statement disc earrings.

This is not the first time that Mrs O has shown her support for the UK’s design talent. Earlier this year she chose a dress by Scottish designer Jonathan Saunders, for a dance event in Washington, which she accessorised with a necklace by another leading light of British fashion, Richard Nicoll.

Basso & Brooke were the first winners of the Fashion Fringe competition, back in 2004. This is the first time that Mrs Obama has worn their designs.
