Slumdog Millionaire actor Dev Patel to star in M Night Shyamalan movie
Brit actor Dev Patel, the star of 2009’s hit movie Slumdog Millionaire, has landed his first major Hollywood film role in a new movie from The Sixth Sense director, M Night Shyamalan.
The 18-year-old has had a mind-blowing start to 2009 with appearances at Hollywood’s biggest awards dos, including the Golden Globes last month and the forthcoming Oscars later in February, for his star performance in Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire.
Now Patel is set to take on an action role in the fantasy adventure The Last Airbender, which sprouted from a Nickelodeon cartoon. Patel will play Zuko, a member of the Fire Nation.
Scheduled for release in 2010, the film is set to be the first of a trilogy.
Director Shyamalan said of his decision to cast the teenager: ‘He was already one of the guys I was interested in. Then I saw Slumdog Millionaire, and the kid just grew in my eyes.’
Patel started his acting life in the cult E4 TV series, Skins, but it was his breakthrough performance as Jamal Malik in Slumdog Millionaire that really raised his profile.
He has already taken home one gong for most promising newcomer at the British Independent Film Awards and is nominated for a best actor Bafta at the awards ceremony this Sunday evening.
The star-in-the-making still lives at home with his mum and dad and revealed recently: ‘My mum is still nagging me to make my bed. That’s what keeps me grounded. It’s just when I go to work I’m treated as an adult.’
