  • WATCH: Joaquin Phoenix appears monosyllabic on the David Letterman show

He’s already puzzled the showbiz world with his declaration he’ll quit acting, but Joaquin Phoenix has hammered the nail in the coffin with his weirdest interview to date.

The Walk The Line star appeared on the David Letterman show this week, promoting his latest, and presumably final, movie, Two Lovers, in which he stars opposite Gwyneth Paltrow.

Settling into the interviewee chair sporting an unkempt beard and dark glasses, Phoenix appeared aloof, speaking in monosyllables, whilst chewing gum and mumbling the occasional response that was hardly decipherable.

Letterman led the interview amusingly, leaving the audience unsure whether the whole scenario was a set-up or not. There was plenty of guffawing as Letterman joked: ‘What can you tell us about your days with the Unabomber?’(a reference to the terror suspect accused of planting a series of bombs in America in the 90s).

As the interview came to a close, Letterman had his final say on the disastrous dialogue saying: ‘Joaquin, I’m sorry you couldn’t be here tonight.’
