Strikes may cancel Oscars and Golden Globes

As People's Choice awards are cancelled, could the Golden Globes and Oscars be next?

The continuing Hollywood writers’ strikes have led to the cancellation of the high-profile People’s Choice awards, leading to rumours that the Oscars and Golden Globes could be next.

The awards set for January have been cancelled, although an alternative ceremony may take place with no red carpet and no media allowed. With the Golden Globes set for 13 January, reports suggest that it may be the second ceremony to fall victim to the strikes. If the awards do take place, the Writers Guild has confirmed that it will picket the red carpet, and many nominated actors have stated they will follow the lead and will not cross the picket line.

The Oscars themselves are set for 24 February, but if the strikes continue, it could put an end to 2008’s entire award season. If shows do go ahead, they may well have to be unscripted and with no red carpet, putting an end to Hollywood’s annual fashion parade.
