What everyones talking about on the Croisette
There’s always a breakout star at the Cannes Film Festival. Remember Sam Riley in Control? Or Michael Fassbender in Hunger?
Well 2009’s most exciting discovery has already been named on day two of the festival: Katie Jarvis, the 17-year-old first-time actress of Andrea Arnold’s Fish Tank. She stars as a teenager whose life is turned upside down when her mum’s handsome new boyfriend (the lovely Michael Fassbender, again) moves in. But, rather than lapping up the attention on the Croisette, Katie’s at home in sunny Basildon, having just given birth to a daughter, Lily Mae.
‘We found her on the platform at Tilbury station having an argument with her boyfriend,’ director Andrea told marieclaire.co.uk. ‘She’d never done anything like this before. I’m not even sure whether she wants to continue with acting or not.’
But while the glamour of the Croisette is passing some by, others are whipping themselves into a frenzy of anticipation about the rest of the festival. Brad Pitt is expected in town soon for the premiere of Inglourious Basterds (but will Angelina be in tow?). And the party animals of the Cote d’Azur are gearing up for the biggest event of the festival: the Amfar gala. This year, Donatella Versace, Carine Roitfeld and Bill Clinton are three of the co-chairs, so expect a heavyweight turnout to take part in the famous auction. Lots include a Milan fashion week package, with tickets to every show, and a private tennis lesson with Monica Seles. Keep reading marieclaire.co.uk for all the gossip…
