Nicole Richie serves just 82 minutes of four-day jail sentence
Nicole Richie donned an orange boilersuit to serve just 82 minutes of her four-day jail sentence.
The star was meant to serve the full sentence for driving under the influence (DUI), however the term was severely shortened due to jail overcrowding, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s department.
The sheriff’s department said in a statement that arrestees sentenced to 30 days or less for a non-violent offence are usually released within 12 hours.
Under the guidelines, Richie was ‘treated in the same manner as other inmates with a similar sentence,’ the statement said.
The reality TV star was accompanied by her lawyer and boyfriend Good Charlotte singer Joel Madden.
Her time at the jail was reportedly spent getting booked, including taking a mugshot and giving fingerprints. Richie did not actually reach her jail cell.
The 25-year-old star who is five months pregnant by Madden, pleaded guilty to DUI on July 27 after being spotted driving the wrong way on an LA freeway.
Part of her sentence includes a three-year probation term, enrolling in an alcohol education programme and she was fined $2,048.
In an interview earlier this month Richie told Diane Sawyer that serving a jail sentence was ‘my way of paying my dues and taking responsibility and being an adult.’
