See what Mademoiselle Gainsbourg wore last night in Cannes
The Cannes Film Festival loves a bit of hullabaloo so Antichrist, the new offering from controversial Danish director Lars von Trier, was always going to cause a stir.
The film stars Charlotte Gainsbourg and Willem Dafoe as a couple being driven insane by grief after the death of their young son. It includes scenes of extreme violence, genital mutilation and – bizarrely – a talking fox.
Audiences in press screenings have been very vocal in their reactions, with laughter, boos and gasps of disbelief drowning out the smatterings of applause. But Lars von Trier has called it ‘the most important film of my career,’ and it seems this is one you will either love or hate. The Telegraph gave the film five stars and called it ‘brave and truthful’, while The Times gave it one star, branding it ‘cold and unemotional.’
However, when Charlotte Gainsbourg took to the red carpet at the film’s premiere last night, there wasn’t a hint of concern in her serene smile. Looking stunning in a zebra-striped Balenciaga dress, designed by her friend Nicolas Ghesquière, she told reporters that she had bared her soul and ‘been waiting for this moment a long time.’
Well as long as she continues to wow us with her fashion choices, she can make whatever films she likes, talking fox or no talking fox.
