Mood? Bustling with activity. Tables are full of diners at this plush, contemporary eatery. After tasting the food, it’s easy to see why. Regular staff and loyal customers inspire a friendly atmosphere.
Why go? This certainly isn’t your average fish and chip shop. All of the fish cooked in-house is fresh and comes direct from Jarvis Fishmongers next door, which has been established for more than sixty years. Unlike most fish and chip takeaways, whole fillets of fish are served, rather than just the top and tail. It is also smoked in a kiln on site. The green leather banquettes, inspired by old-style brasseries, create a laidback setting.
To eat? As well as the beer battered specials, the menu includes more adventurous dishes such as king prawn kebab and tuna burger. There are also grilled fish options and numerous specials. Scallops wrapped in bacon are recommended and the swordfish club sandwich, with grilled smoked salmon instead of bacon, is also a must. The fish is fluffy and flavoursome, clearly fresh and not frozen, and all dishes come with a choice of salsa or tartare sauce, which is made in-house. The homemade chips are delicious, as are the traditional mushy peas, with a hint of mint. Even the rich ice creams, which include bubblegum flavour, are sourced locally from Kingstonian Ices.
To drink? An impressive selection of red, white and rosé wines to compliment the array of fish on the menu. The Pinot Grigio Santo Stefano goes down particularly well. A member of staff can advise and also talk you through the selection of fine wines.
Need to know? This restaurant and the Borough Market branch are owned by celebrity chef Tony Allen. It also serves takeaway. Open Tuesday to Saturday, 12noon to 10pm.
