  • An unhealthy lifestyle really could make you look older as high blood pressure causes the face to age faster

According to a new study, people who eat a healthy diet and live an active lifestyle look younger due to having lower blood sugar.

It is already well known that high blood pressure causes ill health, but the Unilever study found that an unhealthy diet and a lack of exercise could cause you look older than your years.

The research attributed the ageing to a build-up of sugar which is difficult for the body to remove and attaches to the collagen in the skin, removing elasticity.

Researchers also suggested the glucose could hamper insulin production which is known to play a key role in ageing.

‘This adds extra evidence that there is another reason to have a healthy lifestyle – because it is going to affect your appearance as well as your health,’ says study leader David Gunn.

Diana van Heemst, of Leiden University in the Netherlands, says: ‘The associated benefit of looking younger might provide an extra motivation to bring about healthy lifestyle changes for wellbeing and health in advanced middle age.’
