  • Asda launches the £5 office outfit

They already offer a £15 men’s suit, a £60 wedding dress and a £35 tuxedo, but now Asda has introduced their lowest priced look to date, with a £5 work outfit.

Going on sale from 26 February, the outfit is composed of a white shirt and black bootleg trousers. It will be available in sizes 8-24.

The supermarket chain conducted a poll of 1000 customers to discover what women wore to work. Their findings led to the budget trouser and shirt look, which 91% of women were found to wear at least three times a week.

George brand director Fiona Lambert commented, ‘Although this is a bargain at £5, the George Formal Wear team have created a timeless outfit that focuses on quality, design and fit.’ She added, ‘Office staples can be stylish but they do not have to be expensive.’

Although many may question the ethical credentials of such budget items, Asda insist that customers need not worry. ‘The company is signed up to the Ethical Trading Initiative’s code of practice,’ a spokesman confirmed, and added that the company making the clothing in Vietnam has been independently audited for working conditions and wages.

He added that such prices were possible because, ‘To bring customers the outfit at such fantastic prices, George buys material by the mile rather than the yard. It then passes these cost savings, delivered by economies of scale, directly to customers through tiny margins.’
