  • New fitness craze mixes power walking with shopping

The latest craze sweeping America will be music to your ears; it combines shopping with power walking and is being dubbed ‘mallercise’.

Women are ditching their gym memberships and donning their trainers to hit the shops, power walking up and down escalators in the local mall, while doing a spot of window shopping.

Apparently 30 minutes of brisk walking around your local shopping centre, incorporating some escalator climbing and lunges can burn as much as 200 calories.

And it seems the craze is catching on this side of the pond, with groups of women in Manchester and Leeds already pounding the shopping centres in their ‘mallercise’ class, first thing in the morning before the shops have even opened.

Several laps of each centre often means women walk over five miles each time. So to get ahead of the fashion crowd and bag those bargains before the crowds, sign up for ‘mallercise’ in your area.
