The humble tomato could be the latest weapon in the fight against sun damage
Don’t forget the sun cream – but eat a few tomatoes, too. In a study by the University of Manchester, those who ate five tablespoons of tomato paste daily were found to have 33 per cent more protection against sunburn, which can lead to skin cancer.
Tomato paste is one of the best sources of lycopene, an antioxidant that can neutralise many of the harmful skin-damaging effects of UV light. Professor Mark Birch-Machin, a dermatology scientist, said: ‘Eating tomatoes will not make you invincible in the sun, but it may be a useful addition to the sun-protection toolbox.’
