    A brisk, 10-minute walk can improve our quality of life, scientists said today.

    Overweight people would strongly benefit from a short, daily power walk after a study of obese and overweight women.

    The findings showed that women who exercised for an average of 70 minutes a week showed considerable improvement in their health and had better social lives than those who did no exercise.

    The new medical advice, presented at an American Heart Association conference, contradicts UK Government guidelines that suggest taking 30 minutes of exercise, five times a week.

    Researcher Angela Thompson commented on the guidelines: ‘Walking a little bit every day will help tremendously. That is an important public health message.’
