  • The Little Black Dress is voted top style icon – but forget about velour tracksuits

It’s a classic wardrobe must-have, made famous by legendary star, Audrey Hepburn, in Breakfast at Tiffany’s – and now, the LBD has been voted the most influential fashion item of all time.

In a poll of 3000 women, 76% said the LBD had had the most effect on their style, while half revealed they have at least one hanging on their clothes rail.

Men also shared the love for the LBD, with 31% saying it’s the outfit they most like to see their partner in.

Unsurprisingly, jeans came in as the second most influential item, with 37% voting in their favour – and 81% admitting they had owned at least ten pairs so far.

The survey, commissioned by The Clothes Show, also revealed the top fashion disaster. Top of the flops? The velour tracksuit (loved by stars such as Coleen McLoughlin). Shell suits, puffball skirts and hotpants were also voted style no-no’s.

The study also revealed that more than a quarter – 27% – had bought £500 of items they have never worn – and that Kylie is our favourite fashionable celebrity.
