Lewtrenchard Manor

Enjoy a rich, gourmet dinner on the fringes of Dartmoor in Devon

Where? Lewdown, Okehampton, Devon, EX20 4PN (01566-783222, www.lewtrenchard.co.uk)

Mood? Refined and elegant, dinner in this stunning Jacobean manor house is an experience to be savoured

Why go? A true ‘special occasion’ location, this is a place to save up (and dress up) for

To wear? Leave the denim at home; men will be in jackets and shirts, while ladies favour sleek dresses from the likes of Diane von Furstenberg or Nicole Farhi

To eat? If you’re too nervous to try jellied pig’s head with twice cooked stuffed pig’s trotter, tiger prawn tortellini with smoked mackerel rillette and shellfish sauce is a no less flavoursome starter. A main of pan-fried pollock with split green pea puree and sautéed scallops or Cornish beef, meanwhile, will set the tastebuds tingling. Despite the rich flavours, try and leave room for dessert; the hot chocolate tart served with kumquats and cardamom ice cream was the clear winner in our round-the-table taste test.

To drink? The wine list spans countries and continents with enough expertly selected whites, reds and champagnes to satisfy even the most demanding connoisseur. For those still learning their Burgundy from their Bordeux, however, there is also a good selection of well-priced house wines and half bottles to choose from.

Need to know? A three-course dinner, with canapés, costs from £40. Lewtrenchard Manor also houses a number of suites and bedrooms – look out for special dinner, bed and breakfast offers at www.lewtrenchard.co.uk.
