The usually reserved star – who has mostly recently been seen on all singing, all dancing hit show Glee - shocked viewers with the outburst, which came as she was promoting her new healthy eating cook book My Father’s Daughter: Delicious, Easy Recipes Celebrating Family & Togetherness.
At one point during the show talk turned to her family, with Gwynnie and host Chelsea speaking about the how they both had ‘mean’ German grandmothers.

Justifying her outburst, Gwynnie revealed her late grandmother – who is thought to have died in 2006 – ‘hated my guts’.
‘She basically hated my guts,’ the actress explained to the American audience. 'She tried to poison my mother [actress Blythe Danner] against me, but it didn’t work because I have a great mother.’
‘She was just tough, just tough. You look back and you think she must not have been very happy and she must have had a lot of pain because she was mean as hell.’
‘She was a German and they have a lot to feel bad about,’ comedian Chelsa retorted.
