If you cringed at the street style shots of dad trainers paired with floral frocks at Fashion Week, and were offended by the use of trainers outside of the gym full stop, then I'm afraid to say you're quite alone on that one.

Because it turns out that not only are they now a permanent fixture in the fashion world, but they've taken over Instagram too.

And in case you were wondering, there's one particular style that's been very popular on the 'gram, and you might even own a pair: Adidas NMD.

According toe Forward2Me, it's been tagged a whopping 5.7m times on the picture sharing platform.

In fact, Adidas is currently dominating hashtags, as the second most Instagrammable pair of trainers are the Adidas Yeezy 350, their collab with Kanye West.

Vans Old Skool are the third top choice of sneakers, while Adidas Superstarsare a solid fourth.

Rounding up the top five are another cult classic: the Converse Chuck Taylors, another firm favourite with the Fashion Week street style set.

But whilst you might think Adidas are winning at everything, here's another fun fact for you: 53% of the world's most Instagrammed trainers are Nike.

Time to get on board.

Penny Goldstone is the Digital Fashion Editor at Marie Claire, covering everything from catwalk trends to royal fashion and the latest high street and Instagram must-haves.

Penny grew up in France and studied languages and law at the Sorbonne Nouvelle University in Paris before moving to the UK for her MA in multimedia journalism at Bournemouth University. She moved to the UK permanently and has never looked back (though she does go back regularly to stock up on cheese and wine).

Although she's always loved fashion - she used to create scrapbooks of her favourite trends and looks, including Sienna Miller and Kate Moss' boho phase - her first job was at MoneySavingExpert.com, sourcing the best deals for everything from restaurants to designer sales.

However she quit after two years to follow her true passion, fashion journalism, and after many years of internships and freelance stints at magazines including Red, Cosmopolitan, Stylist and Good Housekeeping, landed her dream job as the Digital Fashion Editor at Marie Claire UK.

Her favourite part of the job is discovering new brands and meeting designers, and travelling the world to attend events and fashion shows. Seeing her first Chanel runway IRL at Paris Fashion Week was a true pinch-me moment.
