The question on everyone’s lips – who will walk away with an Oscar this year – is one step closer after the 2009 Oscar nominations have finally been announced.

After a painstaking wait, we can reveal who could be delivering their acceptance speeches to Hollywood’s A-list and who will walk away empty-handed.

Period love story, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, starring Brad Pitt as an old man who ages in reverse and Cate Blanchett, leads the way with a grand total of 13 nominations.

Meanwhile the British contigent are following close behind with a total of 10 nods for Slumdog Millionaire, dubbed the ‘feel good movie of 2009’.

Kate Winslet could continue her winning streak after a double whammy at the Golden Globes, with a nomination for Best Actress for her role in The Reader.

Director Danny Boyle may find further success with his runaway hit, Slumdog Millionaire, after being nominated for Best Director.

Heath Ledger has received his second posthumous nomination for Best Supporting Actor in Batman movie The Dark Knight, exactly one year after he died of a drugs overdose in a New York apartment. Ledger was awarded a gong at the Golden Globes for his sinister role as The Joker.
