Jodie Foster finally comes out publicly after 14 years
Jodie Foster has finally gone public as a lesbian after paying tribute to her girlfriend at an awards ceremony.
The Oscar-winning actress has always vehemently refused to discuss her sexuality in interviews and with the press. However following her award win at a Women in Entertainment breakfast, Foster broke her silence and thanked ‘her beautiful Cydney’.
Foster’s heartfelt acceptance speech revealed what was already an open secret amongst the rich and famous in Hollywood. Foster has resisted calls from gay rights activists over the years to make clear her sexuality, but has finally publicly paid tribute to her film producer partner Cydney Bernard ‘who sticks with me through all the rotten and the bliss.’
The couple met back in 1993 on the film set of Sommersby and have two sons together aged nine and six. Foster gave birth to both, but never revealed the identity of the father or the circumstances of their conception.
Yesterday Kathy Belge, of the website Lesbian Life, said: ‘I never thought I’d see this day. Perhaps it was because her children are getting older and she didn’t want them to think there was anything wrong with being gay.
‘Perhaps she was simply sick and tired of life in the closet. Whatever her reasons, we are pleased that Jodie found the courage to be true to herself.’
