  • Gwyneth Paltrow admits she fought to revive career after motherhood

    Gwyneth Paltrow

has revealed that she struggled to revive her career after having children because ruthless Hollywood bigwigs prefer to hire younger and prettier replacements.

The 35-year-old actress took two years out from acting to raise her two young children, but did fear that her decision may cost her her career.

Paltrow said reviving a Hollywood career following motherhood is a tough job, ‘especially if you are a woman and especially if you are not 25.’

‘I took time off and I really didn’t know if there would be a place for me any more. Hollywood is cut-throat and everybody has got a short memory. There’s always somebody younger or prettier or hotter.

‘I was very realistic about the fact that there might not be any more room for me. I definitely knew I had lost my place.’

Speaking in Cannes, Paltrow said her next movie, Two Lovers, which she is at the festival to promote, had provided her with a ‘lifeline’ after her career break. ‘It was a gift for me, to go from being a mother at home for a long time – which was the greatest joy of my life – to this film.’

Paltrow has grafted in the last few weeks to reinstate herself in the Hollywood world, promoting her current film Iron Man. The actress has sported a series of thigh-skimming dresses and vertiginous heels on the promotional tour, proving she may be 35, but she has definitely still got it.
