Heston Blumenthel beats Gordon Ramsay to top restaurant spot
Gordon Ramsay’s position as top UK chef took another wobbly turn today as Heston Blumenthal’s restaurant The Fat Duck pipped Gordon Ramsay’s to the top spot in a prestigious restaurant guide.
In its first-ever top 40 restaurant rating, The Good Food Guide placed Heston’s Fat Duck of Bray, Berks, as the top food hotspot, leaving Gordon Ramsay’s flagship store eating his scraps in second place.
It’s the first time the guide has ranked restaurants in its 50-edition history, using a combination of reader feedback and expert visits to make the decision.
Second place may come as a further blow to Ramsay, who’s experienced a number of professional knocks in the last few months. His Chelsea restaurant recently dropped from the top spot of both the Harden’s and Zagat guides for the first time in seven years, while his tenure at the Connaught in Mayfair ended, apparently after a row over whether his chefs should provide room service. On top of which, his New York restaurant hasn’t been well-received by American critics, who have suggested, with so many projects on the go, he may be spreading himself too thin.
Famed for its unusual dishes like egg and bacon ice cream and snail porridge, Blumenthal’s Fat Duck was praised for its ‘white-hot gastronomic alchemy’.
