  • Clooney hits the red carpet with his stunning new girlfriend to open the 2009 London Film Festival…

Silver fox George Clooney set hearts a flutter in Leicester Square last night as he walked the red carpet at the opening of The Times BFI 53rd London Film Festival.

Looking dapper in a black tuxedo, Clooney, 48, held hands with new girlfriend Elisabetta Canalis as fans gathered in their hundreds to catch a glimpse of the star.

Canalis, 30, looked stunning in a strapless floor-length black gown, with smokey eyes and soft curls in her hair. A successful Italian model and actress, Canalis is famed for playing minor roles in the films Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo and Virgin Territory, and now, of course, for being Mr Clooney’s plus one.

Last night’s screening of Fantastic Mr Fox was also attended by Bill Murray, Jason Schwartzman, Jonathan Ross and Cindy Crawford. Meryl Streep, who voices Mrs Fox in the animated movie, didn’t attend as she’s suffering from flu.

Thankfully, Clooney won’t be heading back stateside just yet: he has another two films screening at this year’s festival so film fans can get another Clooney fix before the week is out.

The hotly anticipated comedy The Men Who Stare at Goats, also starring Ewan McGregor launches tonight at the Odeon Leicester Square. And Up In The Air, a sharply scripted and crisply directed story set in the world of high flying business travel screens on Sunday 18th October.

We’ll be keeping our eyes peeled for more Clooney/Canalis gossip throughout the festival fortnight, so watch this space!
