This time around the sci-fi show faces stiff competition from Life On Mars, The Bill and Shameless in the Most Popular Drama category.

The Doctor’s assistant, Freema Agyeman, is in good company in the Most Popular Actress category facing Eastenders’ Kara Tointon, Lacey Turner and Corrie’s Sue Cleaver.

David Tennant is hot favourite to pick up the Most Popular Actor category which also includes Corrie’s Antony Cotton.

Host Sir Trevor McDonald said: ‘It has been a controversial year for the industry, but the awards are a celebration of TV at its most popular. The variety of nominees shows the remarkable range of the programmes we all watch.’
