  • Stars hit red carpet for the opening night of Cannes Film Festival

The 61st Cannes Film Festival got under way yesterday with a traditional red carpet parade and a glamorous gala evening hosted by Chopard and Alberta Ferretti.

Sean Penn and Julianne Moore lead this year’s judges and Penn joined fellow judge Natalie Portman for the first night premiere of Blindness, starring Moore, which is up for the prestigious Palme D’or award.

Already gossip on the French Riviera is spreading like wildfire with Angelina and Brad choosing the festival to confirm the worst kept secret in Hollywood – that they are expecting twins. In fact it was Angelina’s co-star Jack Black who let the news slip in a joint interview to promote their new movie, Kung Fu Panda.

Jack Black frolicked with 40 huge pandas on the red carpet yesterday morning to help launch the festival and promote his movie.

Meanwhile, Cate Blanchett proved that she has bounced right back into her pre-baby shape, showing off her svelte physique wearing an elegant peach Giorgio Armani Privé gown. Eva Longoria was also on red carpet duty, looking stunning in a fabulous turquoise Versace floor-length gown for the Blindness premiere.

The festival promises to be a celeb-packed affair with Steven Spielberg’s eagerly anticipated Indiana Jones follow-up drawing in the crowds and Scarlett Johansson and Penelope Cruz appearing for their Woody Allen movie, Vicky Cristina.

Madonna will grace the French town next week for the annual fundraising gala for amfAR and showcase her new documentary entitled I Am Because We Are.
