It might surprise you
After your lunch break workout, you might be tempted to gorge on a protein shake or something equally hearty but apparently the best food for your fitness is actually beetroot. Yep, beetroot is one of the best postworkout snacks you can get.
So next time you’re thinking about what to eat before and after exercise, you should incorporate this into your diet to maximise your work-out.
According to a Newcastle university study, Beetroot has been proven to boost performance and improve recovery in less fit individuals. And, combining beetroot and HIIT is the key to improving fitness levels and performance because it helps with recovery and regeneration.
Dr Tom Clifford, a scientist at Newcastle University explains: ‘the nitrate in beetroot seems beneficial for fast-twitch muscles which we use for short bursts of rapid movement, as we do for HIIT training and competitive team sports.’
And, another study published in the European Journal of Applied Physiology revealed that those who consumed beetroot for just five days achieved significantly better scores across a number of fitness measures during HIIT style exercises.
So what does this mean? It means that beetroot is perfect for those who take part in short-duration maximal-intensity exercise.
