The sheer dress that captured Prince William's heart was sold for £78 000 at auction yesterday.
The skimpy see-through number, which was actually designed as a skirt, was put up for auction alongside couture gowns that belonged to Princess Diana and lingerie from the Duchess of Windsor Wallis Simpson’s collection.
Ms. Middletonwore the dress in the 2002 St Andrews University charity fashion show, for which Prince William paid £200 to sit on the front row.
He is said to have approached his future bride after becoming smitten with her in the show, and the rest is history.
Designed by Charlotte Todd, a university student, the dress cost very little to make.
‘I never imagined as I sat knitting this piece it would be so important… A small part of me will always be part of royal history,’ she said.
Bought by ‘Nick from Jersey’ the buyer of this coveted item wished to remain somewhat anonymous.
