Hit US show Ugly Betty has been cancelled and will be taken off air in March, ABC has revealed.

This blow comes as viewers in the US are just half way through the current series.

The fashion favourite set in New York was an instant hit when it began in 2006, even picking up Golden Globe and Emmy awards.

But Betty and her Mode friends have not been doing so well in recent years, and the show has struggled with dwindling viewing figures.

It’s rumoured that Betty will be replaced with episodes of Samantha Who? and In the Motherhood.

‘The Thursday night block is a good opportunity to launch these comedies,‘ an ABC spokesperson said.

But the word on the street is that Betty will definitely be back – until the end of the series, at least.

‘Betty is a solid performer and there is no question that it will definitely be back to complete its season,‘ the ABC insider added.
