President's half-brother, George Obama, arrested for alleged marijuana possession
Barack Obama’s half-brother has been arrested for alleged marijuana possession.
George Obama was arrested near his home in a Nairobi slum after apparently being caught with one joint of ‘bhang’.
According to Joshua Omokulongolo, the area’s police chief, there is no suggestion that George was attempting to deal drugs.
‘He is not a drug peddler,’ said Omokulongolo, ‘But it’s illegal, it’s a banned substance.’
The 26-year-old is due in court today and he disputes the charges.
‘They took me from my home,’ he told reporters from his prison cell. ‘I don’t know why they are charging me.’
President Barack Obama and George Obama share the same father but they have only met a couple of times, once when they were young children and in 2006 when Barack visited East Africa.
Of their second meeting, George reportedly said: ‘It was very brief, we spoke for just a few minutes. It was like meeting a complete stranger.’
In his book Dreams From My Father, Barack described his half-brother as a ‘handsome, round-headed boy with a wary gaze’.
Although several of the President’s Kenyan relatives flew out to the USA for his inauguration on January 20, George Obama did not.
