Baby Neha Afreen was battered, bitten and burned by her father because he wanted a son
A three-month-old baby died of a cardiac arrest in Bangalore yesterday after being admitted to hospital with head injuries and a dislocated neck.
Baby Neha Afreen was admitted to the Vani Vilas Hospital in Bangalore on April 5 with severe head injuries, a dislocated neck and bite and burn marks covering her body.
Her father Umar Farooq is accused of inflicting the fatal injuries because he wanted a son.
Although the three-month-old was showing some signs of recovery on Tuesday, her condition deteriorated and she died on Wednesday morning of a cardiac arrest.
The baby’s mother 19 year-old Reshma Banu claims her 37 year-old husband beat her for giving birth to a girl and attacked the baby for her gender.
Farooq has been arrested and is in judicial custody until 21st April facing murder charges. The death of the baby has outraged civil society in a country where killing of a female foetus and female infants is common.
