If you’d come to us a few years ago and told us that we’d be lusting after deep blue velvet, walnut-effect furniture and more gold than a bank vault, we’d have laughed you out of our minimalist living rooms.
So what’s changed our minds? Meet the new Colonial Charm collection from Dunelm, a fabulous blend of covetable peacock blues and teal, gold and brushed brass detailing, and tactile, sumptuous fabrics. Everything, in fact, that you need to turn your home into cosy, yet supremely stylish, place to curl up in this season.
Jess Gibson, successful blogger and founder of The Travelista is a huge fan. Just take a look at her Insta feed aka @TheTravelista, and you'll see she's got an eye for interior style.
‘I travel a lot for work, so it’s important that when I come home, it looks and feels perfect,’ says Jess. ‘I’m always buying little trinkets when I’m abroad to remind me of my adventures. From hand-painted jars in Tanzania to intricate metal trays from Paris, making sure everything works together is important to me. That's why Dunelm’s Colonial Charm collection is fantastic – it’s given me so many new ideas for the house.'
Tapping into the maximalism trend all the way, you’ll find iconic pineapples galore, Art Deco-style sunburst motifs and geometrics, as well as pretty bird and feather patterns across textured cushions and ornaments. Drawing on colonial oriental themes, its achingly stylish accessories are high on Jess's wish list, from exotic bookends to ceramic ginger jars.
'I love how premium the new Colonial Charm range looks and feels, especially when you layer up statement items with the finishing touches that make a house a home. The new velvet sofa is gorgeous, and I’m in love with the glass trinket boxes.’
The range also includes a host of gleaming barware. Think gold-dipped glasses and a matching cocktail shaker, served on a sleek marble and brass drinks trolley – as if there were any way to make a Prosecco Royale feel more indulgent.
But we’ve saved the best for last – gorgeous, glamorous lighting. Make room on your sideboard or table for a must-have lamp in glass and gold or rose gold-effect metallic, or fall for a stylish smoked glass pendant. 'I particularly love the pineapple-shaped lamp – it’s the statement piece for me: fun, practical and on-trend,' says Jess.
Check out her favourite picks from Dunelm below and get ready to create your own slice of luxury at home.
