Ricky Gervais to host the Oscars?
Ricky Gervais has emerged as the frontrunner to host the biggest bash in the movie industry calendar: the Oscars.
The star, who’s come a long way since his David Brent days and is now carving out a successful movie career in the States, caught the eye of Academy Award bosses at last week’s Emmy Awards.
Ricky engaged in a bit of banter with comedian Steve Carrell, who played the lead in the American version of The Office.
Steve picked up Ricky’s Emmy on his behalf last year, and this year Ricky quipped: ‘Couldn’t actually win one of his own so he stole someone else’s.’
As soon as the ceremony closed, Ricky’s agents were approached by Oscar organizers about arranging a meeting with a view to getting him signed up for next year’s awards.
One source told The Sun: ‘Ricky caught the eye of the right people.
‘They think he would be perfect to host the Oscars and want to sign him.’
If he manages to bag one of the most sought-after presenting jobs going, Ricky will follow in the footsteps of US comedy veterans like Billy Crystal, Ellen DeGeneres and Steve Martin.
Not bad for Brenty…
