Michelle Obama opened up her home to show off this year’s festive creations as she welcomed military families to the President's pad

Michelle Obama has wasted no time getting back to work following her husband’s election victory and yesterday invited families of people serving in the military to the White House to show off her elaborate Christmas decorations.

She used the grand unveil as a chance to thank the families of men and women in the armed forces.

MICHELLE OBAMA IS A HUGE DOWNTON ABBEY FAN

The White House’s Christmas decorations are an opulent affair, based on the theme of Joy To All, they include 54 Christmas trees as well as a gingerbread model of the White House weighing almost 22 stone. It takes an impressive 80 volunteers from across 50 states and just one Michelle Obama to make the magic happen.

Yesterday, dressed in a golden caramel twin set, Michelle welcomed her guests with a speech saying: ‘Our military families truly represent the very best that this country has to offer. This is one big, huge, thank you.’

After her speech she showed off the family dog, Bo, before getting stuck into craft activities with the children. When asked what she loved most about Christmas she said ‘Welcoming all the visitors, we’ll have 90,000 people coming to see us.’

While Michelle couldn’t escape being the focus of attention, she had some stiff competition from her festive decorations, which also featured an 18 foot Christmas tree covered in handmade ornaments crafted by children whose parents are stationed on military bases overseas.

Another tree bears gold star ornaments with the names of those who died in battle, and others feature tributes to former first ladies. When it comes to a chic Christmas, Michelle nails it!
