Cannes Festival 2013 Hit By Jewellery Theft

A whopping $1million of Chopard jewels were stolen from a hotel suite in Cannes, it has been revealed…

More than $1 million worth of Chopard jewellery has been stolen from a hotel at the Cannes Festival 2013, it has been revealed.

It's thought the jewellery heist took place over the weekend, when a safe box containing the precious pieces was taken from a Novotel suite.

Insiders say the late night robbery took place in the room of an employee of the luxury jewellery brand, an official supplier to the prestigious Cannes Festival 2013.

Judicial police spokesman Commander Bernard Mascarelli said: 'Numbers have been put forward that we're still trying to verify, but the figure of $1m ... we're in that range.

'Apparently this [hotel guest] was someone who was targeted because it wasn't someone who had been seeking attention ... There must have been either an inside complicity, or people who were in contact with this person and knew that the person had jewels.

He added: 'It seems pretty unlikely to us that it was just one person.

As the news travelled, even the stars were made aware of the theft.

Emma Watson, who plays a jewellery thief in new flick The Bling Ring joked: 'Someone stole like a million pounds worth of Chopard jewellery from Cannes? I promise it wasn't me!'.

'It's crazy. That's really, really weird... I promise I'm innocent! I promise I had nothing to do with it!

'I went nowhere near the suites - I can have someone vouch for my whereabouts at the time of the robbery'.
