Beyonce Knowles and Jay-Z continued to help Barack Obama with his re-election campaign by raising $4 million at a glamorous fundraising bash in New York last night.

About 100 VIP guests each paid $40,000 (£25,000) for the chance to rub shoulders with the President as they sipped on champagne and nibbled on mini burgers at Jay-Z's 40/40 nightclub on West 25th Street.

Beyonce, wearing a figure-flattering red cocktail dress, introduced the guest of honour by saying: 'I can’t tell you how proud we are to host tonight’s event with President Obama. We believe in his vision.'

He said: 'To Jay and Bey, thank you so much for your friendship. Beyonce could not be a better role model for our daughters because she carries herself with such class and poise and has so much talent.'

He then went on to joke with rapper Jay-Z, saying: 'Jay-Z now knows, you know, what my life is like. We both have daughters. And our wives are more popular than we are.'

Adding: 'So, you know. So we’ve got a little bond there. It’s hard, but it’s OK.'
