All the times Meghan Markle dressed like Princess Diana

Call it a coincidence or not, but Meghan Markle has taken a leaf out of Princess Diana's sartorial book more than once since she started her official Royal duties. There was the time she wore the late Princess' ring on her wedding day, and when she was inspired by her for her Trooping the Colour dress.

Just yesterday, Meghan was spotted wearing a button-down dress for the Queen's Young Leaders Awards Ceremony, which resembled an outfit Diana wore at the Order of the Garter ceremony back in 1992. So we thought it was about time we'd look back at all the other times Meghan copied Diana's style.

The button-down skirt suit

Meghan wore this chic suit for the Queen's Young Leaders Awards Ceremony, while in 1992, Diana wore a similar dress for the Garter Ceremony. While Diana wore a hat and Meghan didn't, both dresses had cream buttons down the front, and a belt to accentuate the waist.

The Royal Ascot dress

For her first Royal Ascot appearance, Meghan opted for a chic monochrome look. The embroidered shirt dress was by Givenchy, and she accessorised with a Philip Treacy hat. In 1985, Princess Diana also opted for black and white in a chic skirt suit with matching hat.

The pink off-the-shoulder dress

For Trooping the Colour, Meghan broke Royal protocol by showing off her shoulders in a chic Carolina Herrera dress with buttons down the front. This was reminiscent of the Catherine Walker gown Diana wore to visit the Berlin Opera House in 1987, don't you agree?

The blue floral dress

In June, Meghan and Harry attended the wedding of Princess Diana's niece, and whether on purpose or not, Meghan went for a floral Oscar de la Renta dress which was remarkably similar to a Catherine Walker tunic worn by Diana in the Gulf States in 1986. The bride, Celia McCorquodale, also wore the Spencer tiara (the one Diana wore on her wedding day) for the first time since Diana died.

The white coat

You'll remember how Meghan wore a wrap coat by Canadian brand Line the Label for her engagement photocall, prompting their site to crash. Diana was also a fan of oversized white coats, and she wore this Versace number in London in 1996.

The striped dress

Meghan wore this cute pinstripe dress for one of her first official engagements, to attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in London in April 2018. Meanwhile, Princess Diana wore pinstripe suits many times, and we love this dress she wore in Australia in 1985.

Penny Goldstone

Penny Goldstone is the Digital Fashion Editor at Marie Claire, covering everything from catwalk trends to royal fashion and the latest high street and Instagram must-haves.

Penny grew up in France and studied languages and law at the Sorbonne Nouvelle University in Paris before moving to the UK for her MA in multimedia journalism at Bournemouth University. She moved to the UK permanently and has never looked back (though she does go back regularly to stock up on cheese and wine).

Although she's always loved fashion - she used to create scrapbooks of her favourite trends and looks, including Sienna Miller and Kate Moss' boho phase - her first job was at MoneySavingExpert.com, sourcing the best deals for everything from restaurants to designer sales.

However she quit after two years to follow her true passion, fashion journalism, and after many years of internships and freelance stints at magazines including Red, Cosmopolitan, Stylist and Good Housekeeping, landed her dream job as the Digital Fashion Editor at Marie Claire UK.

Her favourite part of the job is discovering new brands and meeting designers, and travelling the world to attend events and fashion shows. Seeing her first Chanel runway IRL at Paris Fashion Week was a true pinch-me moment.
