Zac Posen puts on a show

By Carla Bevan  on Friday 20 February 2009

Zac Posen A/W 2009, New York fashion week, show report, Marie Claire

Trust Zac Posen to go one better than everyone during fashion week. Yes, other designers had celebs on the front row, but he had more (Rachel Bilson, Claire Danes and Nicole Richie, to name just a few), and, yes, other designers had live music, but no one had five grand pianos and world-class pianists quite like his, and, yes, other designers got plenty of applause, but did anyone else get spontaneous clapping mid-way through the show just because a dress was just so damn good, or a standing ovation at the end? Thought not.

You have to hand it to the guy, he's certainly got showmanship.

As for the clothes, the Victoriana-inspired collection was a heady, nostalgic mix of floral organza gowns, sculpted little riding jackets and metallic cocktail frocks.

Despite the centuries-past starting point, sex was in plentiful supply, thanks to backless design detailing, figure-hugging cuts and daring, plunging necklines.

There was also plenty of colour, in the form of tiny, delicate floral prints, metallic lamés, and model Lara Stone' ruby red 'Valentine's gown'.

The pièce de résistance, however, was definitely the musical accompaniment, with the five pianists - all dressed in Posen, of course - a dramatic centrepiece to the black velvet runway. When Zac took his bow at the end, rightly so, the group were right beside him.
