Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes shine at Tropic Thunder premiere

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes hit the red carpet last night for the premiere of his new movie, Tropic Thunder.

It's Tom who makes the cameo appearance in Ben Stiller's new comedy about a group of self-absorbed actors making a war film that goes wrong, but it was Katie who stole the show at last night's premiere in LA.

The actress flew in from New York – where she's currently rehearsing for her October Broadway debut - to hit the red carpet with hubby Tom, and she wowed in a stunning midnight-blue halterneck dress with a pleated bustline.

Stiller's latest comedy, which stars Robert Downey Jnr and Jack Black, has caused some controversy in the States, coming under fire for its portrayal of the mentally challenged.

But Stiller today defended the movie, explaining: 'It's sort of edgy territory, but we felt that as long as the focus was on the actors who were trying to do something to be taken seriously that's going too far or wrong, that was where the humor would come from. [The joke is on] actors reaching for roles in terms of hopefully winning awards.'

And co-writer Etan Cohen told MTV: 'Some people have taken this as making fun of handicapped people, but we're really trying to make fun of the actors who use this material as fodder for acclaim.

'The last thing you want is for people to think you're making fun of the victims in this who are having their lives turned into fodder for people to win Oscars.'
