How to get into ...

Winter's weirdest beauty trend

By Lucy Hutchings  on Monday 20 July 2009

Adriana Lima for Givenchy - Celebrity News - Marie Claire

The strangest question troubling fashion commentators this autumn has to be, where have all the eyebrows gone?

Surely the scariest trend to emerge from the autumn/winter '09 catwalks, models sans eyebrows have become an increasingly common sight, as the shaved look catches on amongst some of the world's most prominent designers.

Although brow bleaching is not necessarily a new look, you can't move this season without spotting a bare-eyebrowed beauty.

Just look to Givenchy's latest campaign, starring Victoria's Secret beauty Adriana Lima. Although the Brazilian is best known for smouldering in sexy lingerie, the ads see her as androgynous, alien-like and ghostly pale, with her brows bleached to oblivion.

'I wanted to use Adriana in a different context,' Riccardo Tisci, Givenchy's creative director, commented. 'People aren’t used to seeing her dark side.'

But while this trend may seem limited to the weird world of fashion, it's worryingly catching on across the pond, too. The New York Times reports that the city's scenesters have embraced the de-browing trend, and blames the recession, as stylistas search for increasingly drastic means to make a statement with their look.

Eminent make-up artist Pat McGrath explained to the paper, 'The economic troubles we are facing now open people up to be more daring and willing to don cutting-edge looks.'

So to shave, or not to shave? A trend that's certainly not for the faint hearted, the sans eyebrow look is certainly one we won't be testing here on the MC online desk any time soon!

Worked with an older lady in the mid 1980s who had shaved her eyebrows in her youth;they grew back growing in all directions so she - to this day - has to shave/pluck them and has pencilled-in eyebrows which look "strange"! Please don't go follow what will be a short-lived trend which will ruin your appearance for the rest of your life!!

In my opinion thats one of the worst and ugliest things u can do to your face just for fashion.
To many women especially dark haired ones, dark eye brows gives nice face features .

I would be seriously worried for the mental state of anyone who feels the need to follow this trend for the sake of fashion, I can't see it looking stylish or attractive on any woman and it would just cause problems more than anything else.

Shaved & plucked my eyebrows in the 60's - its true, they never were the same again to this day!!

This is hilarious! Anyone who follows this trend is unwittingly proving that they are a fashion victim.
Comment by Helen on July 20 15:55

Don't do this if you ever exercise! Your eyebrows are there to stop sweat running into your eyes! And personally eyebrows frame the face beautifully wouldn't wanna ruin mine!
Comment by Hannah on July 20 18:13

Why? Seriously, why?
What is the point?

My auntie plucked out all her eyebrows in the seventies or something when it was fashionable to draw them back on. Her eyebrows never grew back! So she always has to have a fringe cut in her hairstyle, whether fringes are in fashion or not!

It might work for Marilyn Manson (sort of...) but it won't work for you. And especially don't shave your eyebrows just before a job interview. This is almost as horrible as tattooing your face!
Comment by darkmavis on July 22 12:43

A good pluck/thread/wax job can make any woman look beautiful! The eyebrow is like a secret weapon that can make you look younger, thinner, more elegant...WHY shave it off!?! Sometimes, the fashion world does things I cannot defend!!!
Comment by badabing on July 22 14:07

Its fashion, fashion was never meant to be copied "word for word", your meant to grasp the essence/mood of it and then interpret in your own way- coping exactly just shows lack of imagination and it would seem there are some people walking around with no eyebrows, and no imagination either!!

This takes me back, me and a few friends in the early 70s were fanatical about David Bowie.
He used to shave his eyebrows so we did too.

Mine have never really been very thick since, but it was fun back in the day.

Well, "2 each is own", ya know?! If u've got enuff guts 2 do this then u've probably already got alittle something extra special about u in the 1st place! U may want 2 try bleaching 1st 2 c if u really want 2 take the plunge knowing there could b permanent damage 2 your brows. Have fun, who knows, maybe I'll b sportin' sum funky BROW-DO soon!
