From Victoria Beckham and Angelina Jolie, to Rihanna and Cara Delevingne - see Hollywood's most memorable celebrity tattoos and tattoo designs.
Tattoos have never been more tempting. Alongside Hollywood royalty, some of the most high profile models on the planet (we’re looking at you Cara) are helping make tattoos a thing of beauty. It seems like turning your body into a canvas is totally on trend right now, and with such an array of celebrity tattoos we aren’t exactly short of ink-spiration (see what we did there?).
Recently Tom Hardy told Esquire that his next tattoo has already been chosen for him by The Revenant co-star Leonardo DiCaprio after he lost a bet. Ahead of this year’s Oscars, Leo bet Tom that the latter would be nominated for best supporting actor. The pair decided that whoever lost the bet would have to get a tattoo of the other’s choosing – and, sure enough, Tom Hardy has to get a tattoo reading ‘Leo Knows everything’. The tattoo will first need a better design, as apparently Leo’s handwriting isn’t up to scratch.
Branding yourself is becoming a particularly popular trend amongst our favourite A-listers. Brit model Cara Delevingne – who leads the way as one of the most decorated stars on the catwalk – recently inked her own initials ‘ CJD’ on her hand (as if we don’t already know her name well enough). Cara’s other inking include the letters ‘AC’ on her pinky, a lion on another finger and the word ‘bacon’ etched on her foot (don’t ask). She commissioned celebrity tattoo artist Bang Bang to draw it.
Kendall Jenner – who’s previously walked in fashion shows for Marc Jacobs and Chanel – got fans talking when she debuted a tiny piece of body art. Kim Kardashian’s little sister had a white spot dotted on her finger. Will Kendall follow Cara’s lead and get another?
Bella Hadid certainly has, getting her first inking — two tiny wings on the back of her ankle — done by celeb favourite JonBoy, who’s also tattooed Kylie Jenner and Hailey Baldwin. The internet has been speculating what they mean: could it be commemorating walking in the Victoria’s Secret show?
Other VIPs who appear to have caught the bug for getting celebrity tattoos include Rihanna, who has a number, including Maori markings and a line of script across her collarbone, Rita Ora and actress Carey Mulligan.
Girls‘ Lena Dunham has an illustration from Kay Thompson’s children’s book Eloise drawn on her back, while Nicole Richie’s shoulder blades are decorated with angelic wings. And Bella Thorne recently appears to have taken a page out of Cheryl’s book, after opting for a big and bold back tattoo.
Whatever you’re after, you’re bound to find some inspiration from our round up of the best celebrity tattoos out there. We just hope it isn’t one of the many designs tattoo artists are fed up with.
Bella just got her first tattoos — two mini wings on the back of her ankle, done by celeb favourite JonBoy. The internet is speculating what they could mean — something to do with finally walking in the Victoria’s Secret show, maybe?
It seems Hailey is curating quite the gallery for herself. She recently got a new back tattoo that reads ‘coeur d’Alene’ (her sister, Alaia’s middle name)…
And also got a tiny cross on her neck to symbolise her strong faith and connection to her church,
After losing a bet to Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hardy’s next tattoo apparently has to read ‘Leo knows everything – which we can’t wait to see. We wonder if Tom will get his own back someday?

Maisie Williams got a tattoo of the date she was first told she would be playing Arya Stark in Game of Thrones. What makes it even cuter is that on-screen sister and real-life best friend Sophie Turner also got a matching one commemorating the date would change both of their lives. Sweet.
Instagram went wild when Mariah Carey posted this Instagram of a new butterfly just above her Mimi tattoo. Whether it’s real or fake, we’re yet to see, but if it comes off, she should get one for real.
Sarah Hyland got a Hair inspired tattoo, captioning it: “Where do I go? Follow my heartbeat.”- HAIR. Got this tattoo by the amazing @_dr_woo_ this past January but since it’s been exactly 2 years since I was with my #hairtribe at the #hollywoodbowl I figured it would be nice to finally post it. Thank you@adamshankman for changing my life and helping me know that all I need is within me. #selflove
Cara Delevingne has this amazing elephant tattoo.
Zayn Malik’s new Star Wars inspired tattoo created by artist, Jon Boy. Not only is it a lightsaber, it ACTUALLY lights up.
Kylie Jenner and Hailey Baldwin who got inking in the same spot.
Chloe Moretz got this gorgeously delicate tattoo by one of Hollywood’s most renowned tattoo artists Jon Boy. The back tatt reads ‘Janet Duke’ the name of her grandmother.
Paris Jackson, recently added to her ink with this tribute to her dad. Posting the image on Instagram, she captioned it with a message to all of her followers, saying: ‘The meaning of life is contained in every single expression of life. In the same session as her number five tattoo in memory of Corey Monteith, Lea also had another touching inking done, this time in memory of her grandmother. Explaining the emotional tattoo on Instagram, Lea wrote: “I lost my beautiful grandma this week.. She wasn’t your typical grandma. She gave me my first cup of coffee when I was 8 years old. She said something inappropriate to every boyfriend I’ve ever had. She never made pie or knit me a sweater. But she was my grandma and I loved her… More than anything.. I love you Grandma.”
Paris Jackson posted this
heart-warming snap showing off her new tattoo tribute to her late
father, Michael Jackson. She explained, ‘”Queen of My Heart” in his
handwriting. To everyone else he was the King of Pop. To me, well, he
was the king of my heart. Thank you @dermagraphink, you’re a legend.
Drew Barrymore has had the names of her two daughters inked on to her wrist. In a previous Instgram post (featuring a shot of herslef with a tattoo artist) she described her new tattoo as ‘a great little lifetime note on my arm’. Very cute.
David Beckham has a new inking on his ankle. He posted this snap on Instagram along with the caption: ‘Great new piece from Mark Mahoney at shamrock…. Always nice to sit and listen to marks conversation for 5 hours whilst watching him work… True artist @shamrocksocialclub’
Zayn Malik has unveiled a very bold new tattoo on his face. We’re not sure what’s more interesting, the emblem itself, or the fact that he’s dedicated it to ‘Mom’, spelled the American way?!
Lily Collins stunned guests at an Oscars after party, revealing a new tattoo, with ‘fragile thing’ written next to a fairy perched on a crescent moon. No word yet on what inspired the actress’ latest addition, but we love the nod to her fairytale roots… She was Snow White after all.
Lady Gaga has has got matching tattoos with some of the 50 sexual
assualt survivors who joined her onstage for her Oscars performance.
David Allen was the artist responsible for Gaga’s new inking and shared
the news on his Instagram account:
‘Honored to tattoo a symbol of “unity” on @ladygaga today. An image of solidarity for survivors of sexual assault. ‘
Kylie Jenner’s added to her growing collection of tattoos with this new number. Posting the new tat on her Instagram, she explained that the red signature was her ‘grandmothers name in my grandfathers handwriting’.
See the latest weird and wonderful celebrity tattoos with our round up.
We have this intricate inking which was completed over the course of 6
months on Adam Levine’s back. The singer unveiled the winged mermaid on
Instagram today and said the piece was ‘absolutely blowing my mind’. We
reckon it must have hurt…
Meanwhile, Justin Bieber debuted his latest inking – a pair of wings on his neck. He shared the photo on Instagram, writing ‘new tattoo :)’.
Kaley Cuoco has covered up the tattoo of her wedding date with this etching of a butterfly. She wrote: ‘the deep, meaningful, larger than life meaning behind this beautiful piece of ink, is….. It covered the last one.’
Liam Payne stepped out on November 23rd 2015 with this fierce new tat – a giant lion. This accompanies his other etchings, of which there are now so many we’re losing track…
David Beckham added a
special etching to his collection in 2015 which was designed by his daughter. Victoria posted this
sweet snap on her Instagram and wrote ‘Harper is a true little artist x
David Beckham showed off his new rose tattoo, above an etching of his daughter Harper’s name, with his wife Victoria posting the picture on Instagram alongside the caption ‘Happy Friday x kisses from Los Angeles x vb’.
Leona Lewis flashed her delicate, feather tattoo on her shoulder at this year’s Black Women in Music Event. And, like plenty of celebrities, this isn’t her first. The star also lays claim to a rose inking on her forearm and an inscription on her wrist.
Father of four David Beckham has combined two of his favourite things with his latest tattoo: his family and getting inked. The football star revealed his new ‘Buster’ tattoo on Instagram and revealed it’s his nickname for his eldest son, Brooklyn. N’awww!
Yes, the rumours are true… Cara has a NEW tattoo. This one is the Roman numeral XII, meaning 12, which is allegedly the young model’s lucky number.
Rihanna caused outrage (again) when she decided to have her traditional Maori inking made ‘pretty’ by American tattoo artist Bang Bang.
Rihanna’s latest inking was far from the standard celebrity style. To mark the New Zealand stretch of her tour, she had a elaborate pattern tattooed onto her right hand and forearm in the traditional Maori way; with a hammer, ink and chisel. Local musician Tiki Taane, who helped with the tattoo, was on hand to film the process – the video of which has gone on Youtube – which shows Rihanna grimacing when the design goes over her knuckles.
Fans took to Twitter in appreciation of the singer and her choice, but is this the coolest celebrity tattoo to date?
Rita Ora debuted her new back tattoo on Twitter with a sultry naked pic. In keeping with her vintage vixen icon image, this diva got a pin up permanently inked on her skin.
Carey got her adorable seagull tattoo to land herself a movie role in The Seagull when she convinced the director Steve McQueen that she was fully committed to the tale and the role. That’s dedication for you.
We don’t quite know what the ‘M’ on Anne Hathaway’s wrist means to the star. She’s never spoken out about the tattoo but some speculate that it stands for Michael, her brother’s name, or McCauley, her mother’s maiden name.
Cute – Adele inked the ‘A’ initial in honour of her new baby Angelo after he was born last October. To debut her new tattoo, Adele wore her hair in an updo for the Grammys ceremony this year.
Emblazoned with the words ‘I [heart] New York’, Scarlett Johansson’s wrist tattoo is a tribute to her favourite US state. Scarlett – who has previously said she likes her tattoo meanings to remain private – proudly wears her affection for the city quite literally on her sleeve with a special charm.
As part of Miley’s monumental makeover, she has acquired some tattoos including this inking on her foot. It says ‘ROLLING $TONE’, supposedly to commemorate her first Rolling Stone cover; the photo on which she is emerging from a pool.
Miley Cyrus paid the ultimate tribute to one of her family members,
tattooing a vintage portrait of her beloved grandmother on her forearm.
When Cara Delevingne unveiled her new inking shortly before the 2013 Met Ball, it certainly caused a stir. But fashion fans were divided. Was Cara’s lion inking the coolest of celebrity tattoos? Or was it her most questionable style choice to date?
As if David Beckham didn’t already have enough tattoos – he’s rumoured to have more than 30, including the name Harper across his chest, a crucifix on the back of his neck and a couple of guardian angels on his shoulders – the footballer showed off a brand new tattoo design as he joined his wife at a London Fashion Week dinner. A tribute to Mrs B, the swirly inking across the back of his hand reads ‘Victoria,’ and was rumoured to be paid for with a voucher from his wife for his 38th birthday.
Now with more than 11 tattoos, Fearne Cotton explained what she loved about getting new tattoos in 2011. She said: ‘I love the look, the process, the feeling of, ‘Yes! I didn’t pass out, I’ve just achieved something.’
Cheryl Cole hit the headlines for an outrageously vast derriere tattoo extending her rose back tatt right down under her cheeks. Her celeb tattoo artist Instagrammed the snap of the singer’s behind after a 20-hour intensive tattoo session. It’s the kind of tattoo that would only look good without bottoms, we suspect.
Testament to her quirky personality, our favourite of Marie Claire coverstar Lena Dunham’s tattoos is her playful back tattoo. The 26-year-old had an illustration from children’s book Eloise by Kay Thompson permanently inked on her back, as she admits she went through a bit of a tattoo addiction in her late teens.
One Direction’s curly haired lothario Harry Styles has caught the tattoo bug. He’s got plenty of redundant tattoos choosing to treat his body as more of an etch-a-sketch than anything else in the past year. Perhaps his biggest (that we know about) and most iconic is his butterfly inking right in the centre of his chest.
We’re more than intrigued by Miley Cyrus’s ‘love’ life – are Miley and beau Liam still engaged? Aren’t they? But it seems Miley’s ‘LOVE’ tattoo has actually got a lot to do with said gossiping. She says the tatt on her right ear is there to ‘block out all of the [rubbish] that everyone throws into your ears]’.
‘Love all, trust a few, do wrong to none,’ are the words written across Rita Ora’s chest. The caligraphy is femine and dainty being barely legible from afar but a clear message to those who are close enough to the pop star. A good mantra for life, we feel.
Simple and elegant, Nicole Richie has some tiny angelic wings printed on her shoulder blades. These look gorgeous in her silver draped backless dress.
David Beckham flashed a cheeky smile and plenty of toned flesh as he showed off one of his many tattoos on his recent trip to China. It’s thought the tattoo, which reads: ‘Life and death are determined by fate, rank and riches decreed by Heaven,’ is one of over 20, including names of all his children, and a sketch of wife Victoria.
A mantra that echoes the sentiments of her Glee character Rachel Berry chasing fame as a stage actress, Lea Michele’s right wrist reads ‘I believe.’ The actress admits she was always desperate as a child to be famous and one day realise her dreams.
Victoria Beckham seems to be somewhat sentimental when it comes to her body art. The stylista has five star tattoos at the bottom of her back, which represent each member of her family, while a Hebrew script down her spine reads: ‘I am my beloved’s, my beloved is mine.’ And, ever the professional, Posh knows precisely how to pose in order to show them off.
Megan Fox has the words of Shakespeare’s King Lear etched onto her back saying, “We will all laugh at gilded butterflies,” which, controversially, was the only tattoo displayed on her back in a French magazine cover image where the others had been patantly photoshopped out. Hmm.
The original tattooed wild child, Angelina Jolie almost has too many inked images to mention. The most prominent has to be the latitude and longitude co-ordinates of all her children’s birthplaces, which she has etched on her upper left arm. It covers the marks that are just about visible from an old tattoo of a dragon and ex-husband Billy Bob Thornton’s name, which she had removed when they split. The Salt star also has the slogan ‘Know your rights’ printed on the back of her neck, and a secret inking for Brads eyes only on her inner thigh – along with many, many more…
Jessica’s subtle back tatt says ‘Know your limits’ – any guesses as to what it refers to?
Kooky singer Paloma Faith has an inking of a flock of birds flying across her back, which presumably makes it pretty difficult to wear backless dresses.
The former tattoo of the Girls Aloud star was a discreet tribal butterfly tattoo – she soon covered this with her latest and most spectacular work of art.
Supermodel extraordinaire Kate Moss made her foray into the world of tattoos with a number of small symbols, including this anchor on her right wrist. She also sports a heart on the back of her left hand, a crown on her shoulder, and a pair of swallows on her lower back.
A sweet sentiment, Dianna Agron has the words ‘Mary had a little lamb’ inked on her upper torso in homage to her mother Mary, who always called Dianna her ‘little lamb’ as a child.
There seems to be something of a trend when it comes to Lion tatts, as the design on Christina Ricci’s shoulder blade demonstrates. The actress added to her large collection of body art with an inking of Aslan, the lion god of Narnia. Of course.
It’s either a massive declaration of love, or a massive mistake to get your partner’s name/initials/face tattooed on one’s body (as Cheryl Cole will testify) but Posh took the plunge when she branded her wrist with ‘DB’. She’s since had the words ‘together, forever, eternally’ added underneath it, in celebration of their 10th wedding anniversary.
Following in the footsteps of Kate Moss and Rumer Willis, Sienna Miller is the third A-lister to feature in our gallery, who also sports a swallow tattoo.
But Rihanna’s most recent inking? The motto ‘Never a failure, always a lesson’ written backwards across her chest, which she had done at the very end of 2009. We’re not entirely sure why it’s written backwards – perhaps so she can read her own wise words when she looks in the mirror?
Our favourite Girl Aloud is another to boast a handful of tattoos, of which the most recognisable is probably the tribal design on her right hand – cleverly positioned for maximum exposure when she holds a mic. One she seems keen to forget, however, is the huge rose-woven barbed wire band around her upper thigh, which seems to spend most of its time hidden away – as does the large design on the left hand side of her derriere. But her ultimate regret? It has to be the ‘Mrs Cole’ plastered across the back of her neck – something which she has expressed a keen desire to have removed in the wake of her divorce. And we don’t blame her…
Ever the glamourpuss Sarah Jessica Parker wouldn’t be caught on the red carpet without some hot jewellery. Teaming her Chanel gown at the 2010 Oscars with a faux bracelet inking, we thought SJP would never be without bling again. Turns out it was a co-ordinating Chanel fake tatt, sadly.
The list of Rihanna’s tattoos is as long as her leg: a sprinkling of stars scattered up her neck are the prettiest pictures, while she also sports a treble clef on her right ankle, a Pisces sign behind her ear, a small star inside her left ear, a Sanskrit prayer down her right hip, Roman numerals on the top of her left shoulder, a Maori-inspired right wrist tattoo, a small skull with a pink bow on the back of her left ankle, the words ‘Shhh…’ & ‘Love’ on different fingers, an Arabic phrase on her left ribcage meaning Freedom is God, and now, pause for breath, a highly controversial handgun on her ribs… Phew! That was a mouthful.
As an out-and-proud rebel, it perhaps comes as little surprise that Lily Allen has got a couple of the perma-prints adorning her body – such as this series of symbols and pictures around her wrist, including a barking dog, a smiley face, the Hindu symbol, the Star of David, and, hilariously, Homer Simpson. She also sports the same tattoo as both Rihanna and Lindsay Lohan – with ‘Shhh’ written up the side of her right index finger.
Heroes star Hayden Panettiere – who is of Italian descent – added to the Leo symbol on her ankle last year with a design down her side – of which usually only the first word is visible above her dresses. Unfortunately for Hayden though, she suffered the unfortunate mishap of a very permanent spelling mistake… The inking should read ‘Vivere senza rimpianti’ which means ‘Live with no regrets’ – except poor Hayden’s accidentally has an additional ‘i’ in the last word, and reads ‘rimipianti’ instead. Oops!
A real tattoo addict, Kelly Osbourne sports a whole host of body art, including a small tattoo of a heart on her stomach, a pair of pink angel wings on her back, a teeny star at the base of her neck and a fierce-looking skull and cross bones on top of each foot, to name but a few. But perhaps most bizarrely, is the inking of a synthesizer on her right forearm.
Sienna Miller also loves to show off the three-star tattoo on her upper arm which represents love, honour and trust. Thankfully, the sun-kissed actress prefers to keep her other star – etched into the right hand side bikini line firmly under wraps.
To mirror her right forearm design, Kelly O has an equally bold inking on her left arm – a sailor-inspired anchor tattoo.
Rumer Willis is not averse to the odd tattoo (or five). Demi’s daughter loves to show off the swallow on her shoulder and the star on her left hand, but the design she seems most proud of sees the words ‘Be Present’ written across her rib cage. Well, she clearly learnt from the best – dad Bruce has a handful of tattoos himself.
Sarah Harding proudly displayed her finished double phoenix tattoo earlier this year, which reaches right across her shoulder blades with the words ‘Don’t be bitter – glitter’ joining them together.
The cheeky paw prints emblazoned across Eve’s chest are not the only tatts the singer has, but they’re certainly the most attention-grabbing.
Angelina gave us a sneak peek at the dramatic tiger tattoo covering the base of her spine at the Salt premiere in Tokyo, through her amazing slash-back Versace dress.
Mena Suvari is another who’s got a small collection of tattoos, but her latest addition is the most ferocious of them all – a detailed picture of a lion etched into her neck with the script ‘WORD, SOUND, POWER’ inked underneath it. The actress turned to famous tattooist Mister Cartoon to create her new body art. What a wild child.
Jessica’s little sister Ashlee Simpson is all about the small signs: she sports a star on the inside of her left wrist, LOVE 3 on the insider of her right wrist, a peace sign on her right middle finger, and a huge peony on her left wrist.
Making her third appearance in our gallery, Angelina Jolie also has a distinct tattoo across her left shoulder blade, which she had done in Thailand. It’s a Buddhist incantation written in Khmer script – the language of Cambodia, where son Maddox was born – and is to protect from bad luck.
Since Cara was first inked back in May, it seems she’s giving her rumoured boyfriend Harry Styles a run for his money in the tattoo stakes. Her latest says ‘Pandora’ on her upper arm, after her mother, in a handwriting script.
Singer Rita Ora has over 12 tattoos now, ranging from her siblings names in Hindi to the Greek goddess of love. Her latest is a retro-looking Alberto Vargas pin-up girl on the left side of her abdomen, which she had done by tattoo artist Bang Bang at the same time as Cara’s ‘Pandora’ inking.
Actress and model Lily Collins has recently unveiled two tattoos; a heart, wings, crown design on her wrist and ‘Love Always And Forever’ written on her back which she got while with ex-boyfriend and co-star Jamie Campbell Bower.
Dakota, who it has just been revealed will star in the new 50 Shades of Grey film, has a tattoo on her inner bicep saying ‘Acta Non Verba’, which is Latin for ‘Deeds Not Words’. She follows her famous parents Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson into the acting world.
