Emphasis on party

We all know that while the Oscars red carpet is all about dreamy ballgowns and daring sculptural dresses, the after-party is where the celebs really have fun with their outfits - because no one can drop it on the dance floor in a ballgown.

For the Oscars 2018, there were dreamy dresses galore. Nicole Kidman took over the red carpet in a dark blue Armani Privé gown with oversized bow, with Jennifer Garner following suit in an electric blue Versace gown. In the metallic brigade, we had Lupita Nyong'o (Versace), Jennifer Lawrence (Dior) and Gal Gadot (Givenchy), while hot pink and white were two other major trends.

But for the after party, things got a bit less demure, with more plunging necklines, shorter hems and a helluva lot of sequins. Scroll down for the boldest looks from the party...

Margot Robbie

Margot Robbie's after party dress echoed her red carpet one. Both by Chanel, her first was a demure white number with jewelled shoulders, while the second was a sexier version of it, this time in a pale pink with sheer skirt.

Lupita Nyong'o

To be fair, Lupita's Valentino red carpet dress was already pretty special, but she slayed at the After Party in a gorgeous black beaded Armani Privé gown.

Gal Gadot

Gal Gadot shimmered in a silver vintage Givenchy Haute Couture dress earlier in the day, but for the party she opted for a vibrant red colour, but the dress was still in keeping with the 1920s theme.

Emily Blunt

On the red carpet, Emily Blunt wore an embellished Schiaparelly gown in the palest of blues. For the evening, she went to the dark side in a sheer beaded gown.

Emma Stone

Emma Stone broke all the red carpet rules (yay) by wearing a Louis Vuitton suit to the red carpet. For the after party, she changed into a mini dress, also by the French fashion house.

Zoe Kravitz and Kendall Jenner

Zoe and Kendall might not have walked the main Oscars red carpet, but they more than made up for it in these shorts LBDs. Zoe wears a feathery Saint Laurent number, while Kendall's puff sleeve dress comes courtesy of Redemption.

Penny Goldstone

Penny Goldstone is the Digital Fashion Editor at Marie Claire, covering everything from catwalk trends to royal fashion and the latest high street and Instagram must-haves.

Penny grew up in France and studied languages and law at the Sorbonne Nouvelle University in Paris before moving to the UK for her MA in multimedia journalism at Bournemouth University. She moved to the UK permanently and has never looked back (though she does go back regularly to stock up on cheese and wine).

Although she's always loved fashion - she used to create scrapbooks of her favourite trends and looks, including Sienna Miller and Kate Moss' boho phase - her first job was at MoneySavingExpert.com, sourcing the best deals for everything from restaurants to designer sales.

However she quit after two years to follow her true passion, fashion journalism, and after many years of internships and freelance stints at magazines including Red, Cosmopolitan, Stylist and Good Housekeeping, landed her dream job as the Digital Fashion Editor at Marie Claire UK.

Her favourite part of the job is discovering new brands and meeting designers, and travelling the world to attend events and fashion shows. Seeing her first Chanel runway IRL at Paris Fashion Week was a true pinch-me moment.
