Pregnant Kate Middleton may have let slip that she's expecting a girl during her visit to Grimsby yesterday…

Kate Middleton has sparked speculation she is expecting a baby girl, after seemingly referring to her 'daughter' during her official visit to Grimsby yesterday.

The Duchess of Cambridge's apparent slip of the tongue came as she chatted to members of the public during a walkabout in the northern town.

After arriving 40 minutes late due to bad weather, smiling Kate Middleton made up for lost time by meeting members of the public, who had turned out in their droves to catch a glimpse of the pregnant Duchess.

But it seems she could have revealed a little more than she intended to as she chatted to well-wishers waiting behind barriers.

Stepping forward to take a teddy bear from one, Kate is said to have replied: 'Thank you, I'll take that for my d ...' before stopping herself.

Diana Burton told the telegraph: 'I said to her, 'You were going to say daughter, weren't you?' and she said, 'No, we don't know'.

'I said, "Oh I think you do", to which she said, "We're not telling".'

So could Prince William and Kate Middleton be expecting a girl? It's unlikely we'll find out. St James’s Palace yesterday did not comment, and tradition dictates royal couples keep the sex of their baby a secret until the birth.

During her trip, pregnant Kate's burgeoning baby bump was visible underneath a burgundy Hobbs Celeste coat, first spotted during Kate's visit to Liverpool in February last year.

The unusually open Duchess even told onlooker Bobbie Brown her baby has been very active, replying to a question about whether her little one had begun kicking, with 'Yes it is, very much so'.

After arriving by the Queen's private helicopter, Kate Middleton visited the Fishing Heritage Centre in the Lincolnshire town, before moving on to Humberside Fire and Rescue Service in the afternoon.

Although the pregnant royal's decision to fly to Grimsby raised a few eyebrows, a St James's Palace spokesman explained the decision was not taken lightly.

'A number of factors are taken into consideration when deciding on transport, including cost, practicality and security arrangements and what the member of the Royal Family is doing before and after the engagement,' they revealed.

Kate Middleton has recently returned from a wedding in Switzerland, where she skipped the ski slopes in favour of a relaxing walk.
