The stars of the new Trolls film did the most impressive prank call ever on live radio

While most of us probably gave up on prank calls back when we were about 12, it seems that they are still pretty popular on BBC Radio 1 – especially when there happens to be two Hollywood stars involved.

So when Radio 1 presenter Matt Edmondson challenged Justin Timberlake and Anna Kendrick to go head-to-head on his show in a competition involving prank calls known as AlphabetiCalls, listeners found it hilarious.

The rules of the game? To call two toy shops in the UK and ask about Trolls film merchandise – but by starting every sentence with the next letter of the alphabet.

It proved pretty tricky for Justin, who resorted to the rule-breaking ‘X-cellent’ in order to cover the almost-impossible letter ‘x’ and finishing up with declaring ‘Zed’ before hanging up the call. Either way, Anna Kendrick seemed impressed, telling Justin he was ‘the smartest person’ she knows.

While it might have been a tough act to follow, Anna managed to pull out some sneaky Pixar movie names in order to nail those trickier letters, including Kung Fu Panda and Zootropolis. But while she seemed to beat Justin fair and square, fans were pretty keen for the producers to accept ‘X-cellent’.

Justin and Anna were there to promote their new film together, Trolls, in which they voice the characters of Branch and Poppy. Based in Troll Village, the Dreamworks film sees Princess Poppy (a.k.a Anna Kendrick) throw a party which unfortunately attracts the attention of the Bergens – miserable creatures who eat Trolls in the belief that it will make them happy.

As her friends are troll-napped, Poppy persuades the only troll tough enough to take on the Bergens to help – Branch (a.k.a Justin Timberlake). With a rather brilliant cast attached to the project, including James Cordon, Russell Brand, Zooey Deschanel, Gwen Stefani and Kunal Nayyar, we’re expecting it to be pretty funny actually.
