The nominees for the all-new British Fashion Awards 2016 have been revealed. Of the nine main categories, three awards still specifically recognise British talent, namely the titles for British Womenswear Designer of the Year, best British Brand and British Menswear Designer of the Year.

The most noteworthy nominees include Jonathan Anderson, who won the award for both womenswear and menswear designer of the year in 2015 has been nominated again alongside Christopher Kane, Roksanda Ilincic, Sarah Burton and Simone Rocha for womenswear, and Craig Green, Grace Wales Bonner, Tom Ford and Vivienne Westwood in the men's category. As for the rookie deisgner, Alessandra Rich, Charles Jeffrey, Faustine Steinmetz, Molly Goddard and Self Portrait are in the running for British Emerging Talent, which was awarded to Wales Bonner and Thomas Tait last year, for menswear and womenswear respectively.

The hot topic is of course the brand new International Urban Luxury Brand award. The nominees naturally include label-du-jour Vetements, with Adidas, Gosha Rubchinskiy, Off-White and Palace also up for the first-time accolade. Gucci, which will undoubtedly be a big winner on the night, is up for three awards – Creative Director, and deisgner-of-the-moment, Alessandro Michele is nominated for International Accessories Designer as well as International Ready-to-Wear Designer, while Gucci president and chief executive Marco Bizarri is nominated for International Business Leader.

Sisters Bella and Gigi Hadid are going head-to-head for the International Model Award, which Jourdan Dunn took home last year. Also in the running are Adwoa Aboa, Kendall Jenner and Lineisy Montero.

On August 17th we wrote: Each December, at the Royal Albert Hall, the fashion industry convenes to celebrate those who are shaping the sartorial landscape in the UK at the British Fashion Awards. A star-studded affair, this year sees the addition of several new categories and a name change that indicates a joyfully progressive point of view.

It seems the British fashion industry is championing inclusivity post-Brexit, following today's announcement by the British Fashion Council that the ceremony has been re-christened 'The Fashion Awards' and all-new prizes have been introduced to further reflect their all-embracing ethos. An award for urban luxury will focus on streetwear designers, and a creative influencer accolade heroes behind-the-scenes talent from stylists to set designers. Another worthy addition is the Swarovski award for positive change, which highlights any brand or individual who has used their profile to promote a cause outside of the fashion industry in 2016.

‘The new categories really herald the future of the fashion world,’ Caroline Rush CBE, CEO of the British Fashion Council exclusively told us. ‘This is a global industry and the Fashion Awards this year will celebrate that. We’re also looking at the people behind-the-scenes: the CEOs, businesspeople and other creatives that really drive this industry forward but don’t necessarily get the name recognition. Both the Urban Luxury award and the SWAROVSKI Award for Positive Change are exciting new awards that show the influence of streetwear-led businesses and collaborations and that ethical fashion has truly been accepted into the mainstream.’

The other awards on the night include British women’s wear designer which was scooped by Thomas Tait last year, Red Carpet designer which Tom Ford took home in 2015 and an Outstanding Achievement award which was most recently awarded to the legend that is Karl Lagerfeld.

‘As a global industry we should make a commitment to support talented people from all backgrounds to fulfil their dreams and access the best universities in the world,’ Dame Natalie Massenet, BFC Chairman, said when the BFA's new initiative was first announced. ’Over the next ten years our ambition is to raise and invest £10million to support young people in this goal. London is seen as the capital for the most creative new talent in the world that provides talent and energy for the global fashion industry.’

While most of the awards are judged by an international panel of 1,500 industry members, the fashion icon award is open to members of the public (more on this to come). And, if you’d like to head along to rub shoulders with the stars (last years attendees included Lady Gaga and Karlie Kloss) and your favourite fashion designers you can buy tickets (prices start at £48) on the Fashion Awards website. The awards, in partnership with Swarovski, will take place on on Monday 5th December 2016 - pop it in your diary now.
