Add Cara Delevingne in a ball gown with a Pharrell Williams soundtrack and throw in Karl Lagerfeld's camera skills, and what do you have? Chanel’s new short film, Reincarnation, that’s what.
King Karl has pulled out all the stops for the new project by enlisting the world’s most in-demand musician and supermodel to not only star in the short film, but also write and duet on the bespoke ‘CC The World’ soundtrack.
The film retraces the history of the iconic Chanel jacket, following Coco Chanel’s stay at an Austrian resort in 1954. While holidaying in Salzburg, Chanel (played by Geraldine Chaplin) is inspired by the tailored jacket worn by the hotel's elevator boy (Pharrell Williams). It turns out, the urbane design with sleek trim and sharp structure, is what inspired the signature Chanel jacket.
In an extended dream sequence, Pharrell is reincarnated as Franz Joseph I, the Emperor of Austria, while Delevingne plays his wife, Empress Elisabeth "Sisi" of Austria. Cue an imperial waltz, with a Pharrell-soundtracked twist.
Filming took place in a Parisian studio in October, where Karl’s six year old godson Hudson Kroenig and Chanel muse Lady Amanda Harlech, who appeared in Lagerfeld’s last pre-collection video, among the extras.
Both Pharrell and Cara will also appear in the accompanying campaign imagery for the Paris-Salzburg 2014/15 Metiers d'Art collection.
Only a teaser has been released so far, with the full video premiering in Salzburg on December 1st, the night before the pre-fall 2015 collection is shown.
