In case you missed yesterday's royal family clothing budget news, you'll know that Meghan Markle, as well as Prince William, Harry and Kate Middleton, need a lot of show-stopping outfits for all the official engagements they have to attend.

Which is why I reckon Meghan will have paid particular attention to Haute Couture Fashion Week, where the likes of Chanel and Dior presented gorgeous ballgowns worthy of any Palace dinner.

More importantly, they tick all the right dress protocol boxes for black tie events, from being floor-length to having minimal cleavage. So here are five dresses I think Meghan could totally wear this season.

Meghan Markle in Chanel

This Karl Lagerfeld creation is just the type Meghan Markle would love. Traditional yes, but with a little twist thanks to a sequin-embroidered bodice and belt, plus I love the addition of the white gloves for extra chic points.

Meghan Marke in Dior

Meghan has always been very vocal about supporting other women - she chose Givenchy and Clare Waight Keller for her wedding after all - so she'd definitely champion Maria Grazia Chiuri by wearing this chic nude number, especially as she's a big fan of wearing pale pink for this reason.

Meghan Markle in Givenchy

Since the wedding, Meghan has worn Givenchy twice, and we can see this lovely partnership carrying on. This long-sleeved dress is just the right side of bold, without breaking any style rules.

Meghan Marke in Georges Chakra

Gossip Girl fans will remember the designer behind Serena's gorgeous gold wedding dress in the season finale, and I love the idea of Meghan being the first Royal lady to wear one of his creations. Like this sequin feather number.

Meghan Marke in Giambattista Valli

As proven by her wedding dress and Trooping the Colour frock, Meghan loves a design that shows of her shoulders a little, so I can see why she would fall in love with this dreamy Giambattista Valli dress, with a delicate floral patterned skirt.

Meghan Marke in Ralph and Russo

Obviously, the Duchess of Sussex is a big Ralph and Russo fan. She wore one of their dresses in her official engagement shots, and for months, the brand was a hot favourite for the wedding dress. so it's not unreasonable to think she will turn to them again for an official appearance in the near future. She would totally rock this suit/skirt combo.

Penny Goldstone

Penny Goldstone is the Digital Fashion Editor at Marie Claire, covering everything from catwalk trends to royal fashion and the latest high street and Instagram must-haves.

Penny grew up in France and studied languages and law at the Sorbonne Nouvelle University in Paris before moving to the UK for her MA in multimedia journalism at Bournemouth University. She moved to the UK permanently and has never looked back (though she does go back regularly to stock up on cheese and wine).

Although she's always loved fashion - she used to create scrapbooks of her favourite trends and looks, including Sienna Miller and Kate Moss' boho phase - her first job was at MoneySavingExpert.com, sourcing the best deals for everything from restaurants to designer sales.

However she quit after two years to follow her true passion, fashion journalism, and after many years of internships and freelance stints at magazines including Red, Cosmopolitan, Stylist and Good Housekeeping, landed her dream job as the Digital Fashion Editor at Marie Claire UK.

Her favourite part of the job is discovering new brands and meeting designers, and travelling the world to attend events and fashion shows. Seeing her first Chanel runway IRL at Paris Fashion Week was a true pinch-me moment.
